Supporting Organisations With Practical Measures to Deal With the Health & Security Impacts of Climate-Related Events
Over the last few decades, organisations have been understandably focused on the need to mitigate the negative impacts of climate change by taking practical steps towards a carbon-neutral world. However, while governments, civil society and the private sector continue with these efforts, the negative impact of climate change is already being felt.
Extreme weather conditions such as flooding, extreme heat, hurricanes, tornadoes, droughts and wildfires are increasing in intensity with the knock-on effects felt on a global scale. These include water and vector-borne diseases, respiratory illnesses, food insecurity, water scarcity, social unrest and conflict. According to World Meteorological Organization (WMO) reporting, the number of extreme weather events increased by a factor of five in the past 50 years and is still increasing.
During a 2023 BCI survey on extreme weather and climate change, when asked about the effects of climate-related events on their organisations, respondents highlighted supply chain disruption (47.3%), staff absence (45.9%), temporary loss of premises (44.5%), loss of power (41.8%), and loss of revenue (27.4%) as the top concerns.
International SOS helps organisations proactively look at how they can protect their business, people and surrounding communities from the negative impacts of climate-related events. We provide information and assistance through digital tools and monitoring platforms, health and security advisory including climate vulnerability assessments and policy development, education and awareness content, emotional support to those in need, and technical assistance for climate resilient health services and infrastructure.
