Operating from Lanseria Airport in Johannesburg, South Africa, we have delivered world-class medical evacuation and patient transportation services since 2000.

Our comprehensive bed-to-bed service adheres to global medical and aviation safety standards. It ensures seamless coordination of air ambulance flights and ground transportation.

Our Vision and Mission

To be the best-in-class Air Ambulance delivering high standard Intensive care in the African skies.

Intensive Care Air Ambulance Services

Air Rescue has over 25 years of experience in Africa and the Indian Ocean islands region. It is a trusted critical care air ambulance service provider across the region. We specialise in medical air transport for patients with complex conditions, ensuring safe and seamless transfers.

Our flight nurses and doctors are highly trained and experienced in emergency care and aviation medicine. This dual expertise ensures patients receive continuous advanced life support and critical care throughout every emergency medical flight.

Operating across vast distances and varied healthcare systems requires expert coordination by dedicated flight coordinators. This ensures safe and efficient patient transportation between medical facilities and eventually to the patient’s home country. We operate 24 hours a day, ready to respond to medical emergencies promptly.

International Recognition and 24/7 Medical Emergency Solutions

Air Rescue is internationally recognised and accredited, holding global certifications since 2007 from the United States and Europe. We maintain EURAMI accreditation for both regional and long-haul critical care air ambulance services.

Our 24/7 medical emergency solutions include coordinating with the patient’s insurance provider. We assist family members who may accompany the patient during air ambulance flights or subsequent commercial flights.

Advanced Medical Care In-Air and On-Ground

Our air ambulances are fully functional ICUs in the sky. Our aircraft are fitted with the latest medical equipment technology. The team delivers exceptional patient care throughout the journey, including safe handover at destination medical facilities.

Our experts manage all aspects of emergency medical evacuations, ensuring the highest level of care from start to finish.

Best-in-Class Aeromedical Transportation Services in Africa and Indian Ocean Islands

Our permanently configured air ambulance aircraft meet the highest international standards and are staffed with experienced medical professionals trained in aviation and emergency care.

Advanced Intensive Care Equipped Air Ambulances

Speed can be the difference between life and death. That’s why the Air Rescue air ambulance fleet operates as fully equipped ICUs in the sky. Our aircraft fly at speeds over 800 km/h and can cover up to 4,400 km non-stop.

Not necessarily. Air Ambulance transport is determined by the patient's medical condition, logistical constraints, and the local infrastructure. If you're unsure, our Air Rescue Desk and medical team are available to advise you on the most appropriate transport options.

Is Air Ambulance transport covered by medical insurance?

Coverage depends on the terms of your insurance policy. Most insurers cover Air Ambulance transport if it’s medically necessary and the best way to reach the nearest suitable medical facility.

Is ground ambulance service included?

Yes, we offer a full bedside-to-bedside service upon request, subject to the availability of suitable ground ambulances.

Is advance notice required? What is the response time in emergencies?

No advance notice is necessary in emergencies. For scheduled (non-emergency) transfers, availability depends on aircraft readiness and required clearances. On average, it takes 2–3 hours to launch after obtaining necessary overflight and landing permissions.

Costs vary based on flight distance, aircraft type, and the medical requirements of the patient. Helicopter transfers, for instance, are often more expensive than fixed-wing flights, especially over distances greater than 300 km. We provide cost estimates tailored to your specific situation and location.

How can I pay for the service?

Payments can be made via credit card, bank transfer (proof of transfer required), or through arrangements with your insurance or assistance provider.

Can a family member accompany the patient? Are there extra charges?

Typically, one family member may accompany the patient subject to medical approval and immigration clearance for international flights. There is no additional charge. Final approval is at the discretion of our Medical Director, but we always aim to accommodate families whenever possible.

Yes. If an Air Ambulance is not required, we can organise a medical escort for commercial flights when appropriate. Our team will advise you on suitability and next steps.

How much luggage can we bring? Are wheelchairs allowed?

Luggage is limited to one business-class suitcase or bag per person. Collapsible wheelchairs can be accommodated and safely stored onboard. Please check with our Air Rescue Desk for specific guidance based on your aircraft type.

Can you land at unlit airstrips at night?

For safety reasons, we do not operate into unlit or non-certified airstrips at night. However, we will explore all viable alternatives to ensure timely medical assistance or transport.
